MELISSA CARPER
FRIDAY 11/18. White Water Tavern. 9 p.m. $12-$15.
Whenever you put out a file that’s as front-to-back stellar as Melissa Carper’s 2021 “Daddy’s Nation Gold,” you’re going to garner some comparisons to the greats: Jimmie Rodgers, Hank, Dolly, Roger Miller. And in Carper’s case, the reward isn’t hyperbole. “Makin Recollections” and “I’m Musing You” really feel basic proper outta the gate, like they’ve been round for a lifetime, and it appears a humiliation of riches that she’s gonna present us with a complete ’nother album this month, with most of the identical musicians who lent magic to “Daddy’s Nation Gold” within the credit: Chris Scruggs, Dennis Crouch, Sierra Ferrell, Matty Meyer, Billy Contreras. Add to that Carper’s intelligent work as one-quarter of Unhappy Daddy and her dreamy duos with girlfriend and bandmate Rebecca Patek in Buffalo Gals, and we’re counting the minutes ’til the forthcoming full-length “Ramblin’ Soul” provides up an Odetta cowl and an enthralling stay-at-home tune titled “Boxers on Backwards.” If the way forward for nation is queer, can we go forward and crown Carper monarch already?
