Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to look at a cease-fire “alongside the whole line of contact between the events in Ukraine” for Orthodox Christmas, simply hours after the top of Russia’s Orthodox Church made an identical request, the Kremlin introduced Thursday.
“I instruct the Minister of Protection of the Russian Federation to introduce from 12:00 January 6, 2023 till 24:00 January 7, 2023, a cease-fire alongside the whole line of contact between the events in Ukraine,” the assertion reads.
“Primarily based on the truth that numerous residents professing orthodoxy reside within the fight areas, we name on the Ukrainian facet to declare a cease-fire” to allow them to attend church companies for Orthodox Christmas, Putin added.
Earlier on Thursday, Patriarch Kirill, the chief of the Russian Orthodox Church and a detailed ally to Putin, had made an identical request in a message posted on the church’s web site.
Minutes later, Kirill’s assertion was dismissed as a “cynical lure” and “a component of propaganda” by Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak on Twitter.
After Putin’s announcement, Podoliak doubled down on his assertion, saying that Russia “should depart the occupied territories – solely then will it have a ‘non permanent truce’. Maintain hypocrisy to your self.”
Addressing the query of a possible cease-fire in Ukraine over the Christmas break, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated in December that “any unilateral name for a cease-fire by Russia is totally meaningless within the present context.”
A cease-fire, Sunak argued, can be a “false name,” and would solely serve for Moscow to regroup its forces.
